Laser hair removal: 6 questions, answered

Dr. Kat LofleyDNP, APRN, CNM, WHNP-BC

Laser hair removal targets the pigment in the hair follicle with light, slowing regrowth over a series of sessions. Here are the six questions we hear most, answered by our estheticians.

1. How many sessions will I need?

Most people need about 6 to 8 sessions. Hair grows in cycles and the laser works best on hair in its active growth phase, so a series catches every follicle at the right time. Occasional touch-ups help maintain results.

2. How far apart are they?

Usually every 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the area. Faster-growing areas like the face come in sooner; legs and back are spaced out more.

3. Does it hurt?

Most people describe it as a quick snap, like a rubber band. Cooling built into the device keeps it comfortable, and it gets easier as hair thins over the series.

“By session three, most clients are scrolling their phone through the whole thing.”

4. Does it work for my skin tone?

Modern lasers can treat a wide range of skin tones safely when settings are matched to your skin. We assess your skin and hair at your consult. Very light blonde, red, gray, or white hair has little pigment for the laser to find, so results are limited.

5. How do I prepare?

  • Shave the area the day before. Don’t wax, pluck, or thread for about four weeks beforehand.
  • Avoid tanning and self-tanner for two weeks.
  • Skip lotions, deodorant, or makeup on the area the day of.

6. What happens after?

Mild redness and bumps can last a few hours. Treated hair sheds over the next one to three weeks, which is normal. Wear sunscreen and avoid hot tubs and intense workouts for about a day.
